Go if you like to spend money to be treated rudely – Absolutely horrible. I had dinner at Tapas Teatro last night: the food was decent, although I thought it was overpriced, the atmosphere was like a diner, and the hostess who also seems to be some manager was rude and mean.
Already when asking for a table, the hostess spoke in a condescending tone. She never even smiled. "Is your company already here?" she nasalized, snapping around so I am answering to her back. Nothing totally unusual and at first hardly noticed by me.
The beginning of the evening was nice, our waitress friendly, the food good. The table was quite small for Tapas, but it worked, no big deal.
I was still eating my desert when the waitress brought the check for the first time. I declined and ordered another glass of wine. The check again followed right away and this time we paid.
I felt rushed like in a diner, but maybe our manager had friends coming over again and wanted this table back (see rating below). This restaurant has elements of cosmopolitan atmosphere with European flair but the staff and management fail to understand the beauty of a leisurely evening.
The return of the hostess:
Right after we paid but were still sitting to drink the wine, the hostess made another appearance at the table claiming that smoking was not allowed. I was startled: We were outside, the table was on the sidewalk, the waitress had given me an ashtray, no one came when I smoked before dinner and before we paid. I managed to shake this dictator-hostess for a second: "If this is non-smoking, why did your waitress bring me an ashtray?" The hostess paused but caught herself quickly deciding to ignore my rude challenging of her authority. She only answered that I could smoke at the both ends right next to the restaurant. I responded that this would be my last cigarette then. Again, even though she obviously lied and just made up that rule, she had to continue her weird mood and power trip: "No, I need to ask you to extinguish your cigarette now" and she left. Needless to say I did not extinguish my cigarette and she came back furious that I have dared to ignore her orders: She snatched the ashtray with my cigarette out from underneath me barking: "This is illegal". Of course, it was not illegal, I was outside. I watched her stride to the trash bin at the end of the street and was speechless at first. I guess she really wanted this table back or maybe she didn't like my dress, maybe she is xenophobic and didn't like my accent..... I don't know what it was, but a friend confirmed to me the same night, that they always smoke at Tapas Teatro, so I was obviously not overstepping any boundaries by smoking a cigarette.
No one came back to our table anymore to serve us form hereon, and the dictator-hostess won her battle: I wanted to leave and return the table to her.
My friend must have spent over $60 for two people that night however the hostess/ manager for some reason thought it was necessary to ruin our evening. She is in the wrong business, the place is trying to be something it is not, the food is good but overpriced.
For me, a horrible experience, and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.
I have been trying to call this place to complain to the manager, but I can't reach anyone.
Great food, bad service – Owner or General Manager,
I just wanted to write you about the experience I had at your restaurant. I first must say that the restaurant has great decor and the food was excellent. Our waiter was also very good. My "bad" experience began when we first showed up and asked for a table of 6. We waited in the bar and watched as a table of 6 just to the right as you enter the bar area finished their meal. At this time our evening took a huge turn for the worse. The tables were divided reseated for 2 four tops. I could not understand what happened next ... a party of 4 who came after us was seated. We asked the hostess and what appeared to be a manager to explain what just happened. She (the manager) explained that the tables just used for 6 was for 8 people only when pushed together. I was stunned until I saw that clearly the 4 people being seated knew the manager. I know 6 people trying to sit together at your restaurant is extremely hard when you are busy and we were all prepared to wait. I am not sure that we were prepared to wait 1 hour and 30 minutes. I found it very unprofessional for your hostess and manager to "lie" to us about the tables being pushed together was for 8 only, when a party of 6 had just gotten up. Your food was great, the waiter was excellent, but the customer service we received during our wait was horrible. I was even more stunned after 3 pitchers of sangria during our wait, we were only brought some olives. Then we were brought egg plant as a comped appetizer and some sort of pudding for dessert. This stunned me personnaly because I do not like olives, egg plant, or nuts which were in the dessert. Your manager comped us $5.25 on our $175 tab. This ending sealed your restaurants fate. I will never return and hope that none of my friends will ever pass through your doors. I am not telling anyone how to run their business, but comping food that no one likes or taking 3% off our tab is rediculous. How about next time asking first what people may like or giving the options if you wish to give away food. I hope your staff noticed that the comped food was not eaten.
Horrible!! – I've been here twice. The first time was not so bad. I went with a group of people and sat outside and it was really quite nice. So I was really excited to return with my boyfriend and have a nice date night out. Terrible idea!! The waitress was horrible. She never checked on us, other to refill our drinks to increase her tip. And when presented the bill at the end of our meal, no one even said thank you for coming. Very dissapointed. We go out to eat alot and are used to good service. We've gone to eat at the most expensive restaurants in the city, but that day we received better service at our lunch at IHOP.
Unsatisfactory. – I've been to several tapas restaurants, and this one is by far the worst one I've experienced. The food was decent and the presentation was very nice, but neither the taste nor the portions justified the expensive prices for some of the dishes. The restaurant itself is quite noisy with tables pushed incredibly close together and the smell of popcorn waffed over from the adjacent Charles Theater. Plus, the tables themselves are incredibly small and rickity, making dinner an uncomfortable experience for taller individuals. The service was decent, but seemed hurried and the staff generally unknowledgable about the cuisine. This might be a fun place for appetizers and drinks, but definitely not a good place for a nicer meal or a romantic occassion.
User review by cpkmb3 – Easy to find, plenty of street and paid lot parking available. We were seated promptly and staff was friendly and attentive - food was mistakenly put on our table that we didnt order, and one item that we had ordered was sold out and we werent notified until about 20 minutes after we ordered it. The food was very tasty and they did have a good selection for all tastes. The tables were too tiny to fit the drinks and plates on, they were mear inches from each other, you were practically touching the stranger next to you not to mention it was loud and intrusive - not exactly a romantic date setting. There was not even room for the most petite woman to get to and from her seat without moving the tables. I found it to be a bit too expensive for the over all experience.
Wonderful! – 5 ofus went and had a blast! The food and drinkwas wonderful! Our waiter was a ittle slow but other than that everthing ese was a dream!!
Share movie trivia and an array of flavorful snacks at this authentic Spanish hot spot. – The Scene
This charming little restaurant in the historic Charles Theater is always bustling with activity. Hip wait staff rush colorful plates from the open kitchen to candlelit tables; friendly bartenders pour countless pitchers of the restaurant's signature sangria--and diners waiting for highly coveted tables crowd the trendy bar and spill into the theater's lobby. Though there's often a wait, it's well worth it. From the massive cathedral-style windows down to the bowls of olives on the tables, Tapas Teatro is the real deal for sophisticated Spanish dining.
The restaurant's motto "Small plates. Big pleasure" is only half true; the affordable selections of hot and cold tapas are in fact surprisingly large. Standouts include the sauteed spinach served with apples, raisins and pine nuts in a warm maple glaze and the Teatro Tenderloin marinated in a spicy red wine vinegar sauce. The plentiful paella--tossed with a generous helping of seafood and sausage--will satisfy even the biggest appetites.
10 – what a great place to experience international Tapas cuisine...we travel to Europe each year and this place brings back all the great memories of the wonderful small cafe's, bistro's and Tapas bars that only Europe had to offer, until now!
Fantastic! – Excellent food at reasonable prices- creative and conveniently joined with the Charles Theatre. A little crowded but with great lighting and atmosphere.
