Best place to work out in Baltimore!!.
I love Merritt Athletic Club Canton! Open 24 hours, great outdoor/indoor pool, several group fitness classes per week...
They also offer ways to lower the cost or freeze your membership. I was going to cancel for the summer because I'm a teacher and don't receive pay during the summer months, but their friendly staff provided me with several options to keep it affordable.
My friend joined over the weekend and now I get a discount every month for a year. That is really great! I feel like you get what you pay for when it comes to gyms and working out. Memberships at Canton include 24 hours, towel service, group fitness classes, and pool. (Oh and FREE parking unlike the MAC!!)I prefer a high end gym where the staff and clientele are respectful & the facility is clean & safe-if you do too, join here!
The club is terriable!.
I joined Merritt Athletic Club last March on the recommendation of a friend. That was a horrible mistake.
1. They charged me $67/mo and acted as if it was a deal. Brick Bodies is $40. Planet Fitness is even cheaper.
2. When I joined in March of 2010, I was given 4 weeks free. I turned in my free voucher on July 31st 2010 and was told it was too late for August and would be used in September. They never honored the voucher.
3. I quit in September and they charged me $99 while assuring me they would not take out any more money from my account.
4. On October 4, 2010, they took $4.01 from my account. When I confronted them they said it was for "two water bottles". I never purchased this (because I havent used their gym since May!) And the manager (who by the way had an attitude) told me they would have to "look back at their receipts".
To sum up, this gym pretends they have a lot to offer, but they have the same stuff any other gym has and offers at a cheaper price. Plus they will nickel and dime
Don't join this club. Too many people occupy this gym to get to any machines, and the reason so many people are here is bc they were all lied too on their contracts, at least I was. I signed up for a 1 yr contract and went to cancel , only to find out some idiot put in their computer that I signed up for a 2 year contract which I would have never done given I'm only here for a year - don't bother asking to see your contract b/c they won't give it to you and instead tell who to contact some women who is never in her office
Best Place to be a member. I have to disagree with the previous review of the Merritt Athletic Clubs in Canton. I have been a member of the club for 3 years and would never work out anywhere else. Towels are actually free and do not cost $3. Yes the club does have great equipment, but SO much more. I can work out then stop in the salon located INSIDE the club and get my nails done before I head to the nightclub by the pool on Saturday nights. It's awesome. They offer so much more than your average health club. I particularly love the Kayak program they have in the summer. I came to the club 35 pounds over weight and thought I would be intimidated by the other people in the club. That was not the case, the staff was so friendly and helpful and I am now 42 pounds lighter. I participated in their weightloss challenge program in January with two of the stars from the TV show "The Biggest Loser" and lost my final 15 pounds. What other club in the area offers all of this. I would highly recommend the club to all of my friends.
A rip off.
Like the reviewer of the Centre St. branch, I feel like Merritt is dishonest. In my case, the front desk gave me one set of information regarding canceling my account, then when I cancelled following their instructions, billing told me that I would have to pay for extra months because I didn't cancel soon enough. But of course it becomes a he said, she said that they win by automatically taking the funds out of your account.
That said, before I cancelled my membership, I already had a poor opinion of the operations. While yes, the equipment is good, the facility is run to drain as much money out of the customer as possible to the detriment of member enjoyment. Towels cost $3 per day (I;ve never been to another gym where this amenity isn't part of the membership), the courts are regularily reserved for pay to play leagues, new cars are parked as ads in the middle of the gym and the pool is turned in to a spring-break style beach bar on the weekends. (Who has heard of a health club that sells beer?) For $80+ a month, I expect to have a better health club experience with more amenities.
All in all, I had a below average opinion of Merritt before I left, but walked away mad after feeling scammed out of a couple hundred dollars. Don't let them steal your money also.
