The service at this place is disgraceful. The bartenders are alright, but the hostess is miserable, the coat check lady "misplaced" four coats the night I was there, and the manager literally yelled at multple guests for not moving away from the bar fast enough after they ordered drinks.
DON'T GO TO THIS RESTAURANT!!! IT IS A MISERABLE EXPERIENCE! It's unfortunate because it is a really nice lay out, but until they fire the manager and some of the front of the house staff, it is going to continue to be horrendous.
I think Baltimore is lucky to have a place like Red Maple!.
I must agree with CSMibileUser4- the negative reviews were very surprising to me!
I do not usually write reviews BUT I know that people are much more inclined to make the effort to complain than to express satisfaction, and in the case of Red Maple I am afraid that is what is happening. And it is not fair.
I have been going there ever since I first visited Baltimore- year 2003- and I have never had a complaint not taken care of by the manager or the staff. To be honest, I have never had much complaints- friendly, helpful staff, great atmosphere, great food and music that I have generally loved! NOTE: they have different music on different nights of the week, so one has to be careful not to wear a sexy night dress and high heels if going to the House music party- it will not be comfortable for dancing :)
One more thing I want to mention, I am European, female and my US friends say I have a very distinguished slavic accent :)
My best friend lives in Baltimore so I visit once - three times per year, and we always go to Red Maple. My friend and his co-workers go there for after work get-togethers (is this "happy hour"?)and I have been with them twice and it is just the perfect place for such happenings! They (me too:) love the fireplace tables, it is so cozy and the cocktails and the tapas are great.
Talking about the food, it is small plates guys (I get the impression that Americans are not very familiar with the concept, as everything is BIG in the USA:) So, small inexpensive plates (3-8$ yeah!), and you can try 2-3 items from the menu, and it is convenient to share, so you can try even more things. We love this in my home country! :)
I do not know what else to say... I have been lucky to be in Baltimore when they have had some great guest DJs at Red Maple (yes, DJs change on regular basis- my impression is, almost as often as the menu:). Just a few days ago, before I left for Europe, I had the MOST DELICIOUS ever pumpkin dumplings, the chef rocks!!!(sorry I did not remember the name).
If you have never been there, you should check it out for yourself- I guess the low tables and the international food will not appeal to just everyone BUT it is definitely a very nice lounge!
Most fabulous spot in Baltimore!.
I must say I am shocked at the two previous nega
tive reviews on here. To each his own but they are obviously one-timers to Red Maple and I would hope you experience it for yourself instead of taking their word for it. I have been going to RM since the beginning and it is absolutely by far the most fabulous spot in Baltimore. Every year we celebrate our bdays there because it's guaranteed to be a good time with music that reaches the soul. Go to Red Maple and have a fun night! You won't regret it.
Utterly Disgusting!. Very unprofessional staff! the manager, laughed when we complained about this DJ being forceful and abusive with a lady friend of ours. Even the bouncer ignored our complaint, which was firm but polite! The music was really bland and unoriginal and the DJ left his booth while songs were playing from a cd for atleast 20 minutes!! The staff does not provide the contact information for the owners if you have to take up the issue with them. Other people around that night told us that this DJ is notorious for this kind of behavior, and is a prick. Very crude and uncivil place and staff.....Utterly disgusting!!
Lackluster and Sad.
I think "Red Maple" may be a euphemism for "hell."
The wait-staff are friendly, but, there is a feeling of "I may not be cool enough to be here." I'm not sure who this bar is geared toward. The clientele is a schizophrenic mix of Urban Haute Bourgeoisie and straight-up hoochies who might either be prostitutes or students from the Peabody. (or both) In fact, this bar is so well decorated -- it's NOT cool or hip. It looks like a set for an architecture and design magazine...but depressing, somehow. The menu is mostly tapas. The drinks are over-priced. The music changes from night to night, but generally it's pedantic bass rhythms and drums. I feel repressed there. I think it's a bar for boring people.
Baltimore nightlife has reached a whole new low!. Throughtout any modern clubber's life there come moments, when all seems lost to boredom and snobbism. Been there, done that. But the owners of "Red Maple" certainly surpass this obstacle with ease! After all, where else would you expect to experience "face-control" in its purest, most obnoxious form? Here, the thrill is practically guaranteed to anyone with a foreign accent (Arabic or Turkish accents excluded). And if, by chance, you also happen to be a female, or better yet, a woman traveling from a non-English speaking country, you are particularly in luck - denied admission on the basis "because I just don't like you!" is guaranteed. Forget the more-than-mediocre food and overpriced drinks - this is truly a dinner and a show for anyone attending. I should warn you, though, that this specific performance is rated R, since the door manager has no problem exercising his cursing vocabulary in your direction - but hey, if you enjoy being referred to as an "a-hole", or a "sl-t", this is definitely your kind of a scene!
Hmm food, ordered some but never got it.
So we went there for my friends birthday, he made his own reservations a month in advance. They forgot to put it in the books. On top of that, half the food ordered from the menu was not available because it was out of season (waiter could have mentioned this in taking our orders). The hostess was of no use because she was too busy pouncing ever guest that came through the door, until she left and the homeless man came in ( i understand, it is baltimore but come on). The little bit of food we did get (half the order never showed up but we were charged) was good, drinks were over priced, small and watered down. I will say the owner/manager is willing to make it up to us, we just have to figure on a date. We'll see if anything has improved.
Overall, i was not impressed by anything that they had to offer.
Just OK. I didn't have any of their food here this weekend, but some friends and I sat at a bar and had a few of their unique martini's and other fancy drinks. They were very good - not too sweet, and well-balanced overall. The building is very interesting, and this is a very typical New York kind of lounge, so it has a tendency toward pretentiousness. Good, but the bottom line for me is that they seem to take themselves too seriously. One thing I quite like though, is that the place is non-smoking.
andanotherone. I went w/ group of friends for a bday. There was a nice mix of crowd. Music is just ok. But the atmosphere is great. Loved the interior. It's nice to have these kind of trendy places so close to home and I don't have to go all the way to DC. Overall, it's a nice place to go to just chill and hang out.
