Tir Na Nog

New American with Celtic flair cuisine located in Baltimore

Three Irishmen had a good idea--to provide a unique experience incorporating the warmth of an Irish pub with New American cuisine and all the while maintaining the same charm and hospitality. The idea became a reality five years ago when the trio opened Tir na Nog Irish Bar & Grill in the heart of Midtown Manhattan.

A design team and artisans from Ireland created this small piece of Ireland by salvaging interesting architectural pieces, furniture and bric-a-brac from churches and castles in Ireland and shipping them to New York. These pieces, combined with rich textiles, Celtic script adorning the walls, and rich, dark wood have shaped an elegant yet inviting atmosphere.

We were drawn in by the beautiful Irish decor, which seemed to be inspired by medieval castles and Irish folk-lore. It was sort of dark and mysterious, but felt a little artificial too. The staff were very friendly. We were a little surprised that this place offered restaurant-style seating but offered little more than expensively priced pub food. I ordered the Tir Na Nog shepherd's pie, which was something like $14 and not very good at all. It was a very bland and mushy bowl of ground beef with taste-less mashed potatoes on top. I don't know if this is the traditional way to cook shepherd's pie, but I've had better. In short, the atmosphere is fun, but the food was overpriced for what it is.

Pros: Pleasant ambience, friendly staff

Cons: Bland food, over-priced

My husband and I went there on a Sat afternoon, and it was quite pleasant. I had the shephard's pie, and it was yummy. The service was quick and friendly. The atmosphere was great too. We would go there again!

Pros: great food

Cons: none
