Lost my business FOREVER – Stopped in for lunch Jan 5th with my business partner. Had just been next door at Evergreen and grabbed a small coffee in a paper cup about 5 minutes before. My business partner arrived and suggested lunch over at Miss Shirley's. Walked over to Miss Shirley's where we've been numerous times over the years and spent plenty of money.
Hostess said "Can't bring in outside food or drink". I explained I had just gotten it and didn't want to dump it, but, I was going to be buying a full lunch for 2 people (which at Miss Shirley's is a cool $40 or more). She said "Sorry, can't do it".
I asked for manager. He said "Sorry, its our policy, no outside food or drink". I tried to explain that I had just gotten it, didnt' want to dump it, and was going to buy a full lunch for 2. He said "Nope". I then explained that he was not only going to lose my immediate business but that I would NEVER eat there again and that I would advise all my business colleagues in Baltimore to do the same. He said "Sorry, its the rule."
He followed me outside and said "Would you have walked into Ruth's Chris restaurant with that cup of coffee?" I replied, "Of course I would". He then proceeded to tell me that the wait staff makes only "$3.63/hr" and they can't afford to miss out on tips". I explained again that I was going to be buying a full lunch for 2. He wasn't going to be losing anything by letting me bring in a $1.00 cup of coffee.
Now, I understand that Miss Shirley's probably has a challenge with college students dropping in with food from other restaurants to join their friends and the wait staff get shafted with small tips. But, the manager could clearly see we were business men, not college students.
What a shame that the manager had no authority (or perhaps ability) to exercise good judgment and decide that my little coffee was of no risk to his staff losing a tip. Instead, he lost 2 customers FOREVER.
Done with Miss Shirley's – I've been to Miss Shirley's on several occasions and I have to say that I am done with this restaurant. Today I tried to place an order for take out over the phone and was told not only do I have to give a credit card number over the phone to place the order (which is not a problem for me), my card will be charged for the amount and I will not be able to pay cash when I pick up the food, as I intended. I'm sorry, but coming from my previous place of residence, New York City, I'm not used to dealing with such amateurish customer policies. There are plenty of places that I can go to and not have to deal with such foolishness.
Best Breakfast in Baltimore, MD – Miss Shirley’s is great! Weather you go with a bunch of your friends or by yourself, this spot is great. My girlfriend and I drove up from Atlanta, GA for the inauguration and stated in Downtown Baltimore, MD. It was snowing on Martin Luther King Day and because I’m from the New York area driving in the snow didn’t bother me. We parked on the street and went in side. The wait was only a minute and we were seated promptly. As we waited for our server the plates of food the servers had for the other patrons was phenomenal. Cinnamon Roll French toast, Crab Benedict and a great selection of pancakes. Our server was great and keep the coffee and tea flowing. When were left the line was out the door.I wish I could pick this place up and bring it to Atlanta, GA. I will make sure I come back here the next time I’m in the Baltimore area.
Mediocre at best – I'm not a picky restaurant-goer and certainly not "high maintenance" and I agree with other posters that this restaurant is just "okay". At 1pm on a Tuesday with no one waiting in line the host couldn't be bothered to get off his personal phone call for some time before even acknowledging my presence. When he did he was dismissive and quite rude. The tables were far too close together - I felt like the two of us were at a family table for 8 and that table had to be pulled out for me to sit. The "Irish" oatmeal I ordered was disgusting--try Le Madeleine in Columbia for really wonderful fresh oatmeal. The waitress was nice enough but didn't come back to refill coffee until we flagged her down. Not worth the cost -- there are other places far more pleasant. I was able to park in the back with no problem as it was a weekday and after the lunch crowd.
slaap yo mamma good! and WELL worth the wait – i agree with the previous poster, any diner who complained about "rude" wait staff and the how long you had to wait are the type of people who i wanted to shove down a flight of steps when i used to be a waitress. there is a reason that this place is packed on the weekends, so yes, don't be suprised if there is a wait. i was just there this past sunday, and when i got there, the wait looked impossibly long, but it was only 20 minutes. i've had longer waits at TGI fridays for food that i HATED! the new location is big, they have flat screen tvs in the small waiting alcove, AND free seattle's best coffee. the wait staff is very friendly, especially for tha amount of commotion that's going on. the food is so good, seriously, you want to sl@p somebody. i'm so sick these self abosrbed pr!cks that think the world revovles around them espeically in the food service industry, it makes me crazy. and for the record, there is no Maitre'd, there is a host, who speaks clearly above the noise and is not rude. and i definately suggest the cinnamon danish waffles...HEAVEN! the next time i go, i'm going to shell out the cash for one of those glorisou looking mimosas...its my mission to try everything on the menu!
Undeserving criticisms of other diners mar this restaurant – As a chef/owner of a popular Baltimore restaurant, I try to visit many local establishments and get to know the other owners as often as I can, and Miss Shirley's is no exception.
My family and I have eaten there many times, and I cannot understand other's comments here except to say that I feel empathy for the Miss Shirley's staff for what they do on Saturday and Sunday, and understand why they make people wait until the whole party is present to be seated: simple economics of the restaurant business tell us to maximize each seat for the most efficient use and profit.
If the matre'd or wait staff was rude, why didn't you say something when the general manager stopped by your table?
I'm sure you were pushy and demanding, but did their staff try to rush you out? I doubt it.
Sure, parking is at a premium.
My suggestion? Go earlier or later in the day, not at noon!
Frankly, I think Miss Shirley's has quite an inventive menu with combinations of items that I wish that I'd dreamed up, would I serve breakfast and lunch.
Finally to all patrons of all restaurants: have some empathy with those who serve you.
Miss Shirley needs a lesson in manners and cooking – Save your time and take a skip on Miss Shirley ... she'll only end up breaking your heart. Her wait and host staff are rude, condescending, and incompetent. They act as if you are lucky to be partaking in there mediocre dishes. Our meals arrived to the table in shifts, every four or five minutes some unhappy looking bus boy dropped off a plate or two, the final two plates came out about 15 minutes after the first and were both wrong. Now the quality and taste of the food ... NOT GOOD!!! For a place that tries to pull off a gourmet breakfast thing, this was no better than a Dennys. The bacon and sausage was heavy, cold and extra greasy, the pancakes were on par with bisquick, and the whipped cream was coolwhip. Oh, don't ask for apple juice unless you want a Mott's juice box ... got the point yet? This place does high volume and it seems as though Shirley knows that they will keep comin', as a result you are treated like an inconvenience and served assembly line produced poor quality food. Did I mention there's no parking???
Completely Overrated – I can't understand why there are the long waits - the food is seriously just ok. The major issue is the service. Upon arriving the maitre'd didn't even look up from his computer to acknowledge me and just barked out a wait time (45 minutes to an hour) to me and handed me a buzzer. We also had to wait for the final person of our party to arrive in order for them to seat us - we're staring at the table that is open,and ready for at least 10 minutes but the maitre'd refused to seat us until our final person arrived (would have been there when we all arrived but he was driving us and still looking for a place to park!). The wait staff is just as subpar. Miss Shirley's needs to get over itself and its Roland Park attitude.
Best Breakfast in Baltimore – Miss Shirley's is by far the best breakfast I've had since moving to Baltimore. Their prices are a little on the high side for breakfast, but if there is one place worth paying $10 for pancakes alone, it is Miss Shirleys. The oatmeal raisin pancakes are absolutely amazing. The omelets are fresh and tasty. My only complaint is that I wish they were open later so that I could make it more often.
A hidden gem in Baltimore – Some of these reviews need to be looked at closely, mainly, this one.
After eating at Miss Shirley's with my family over 15 times, I can say that we've never had a bad meal. NEVER!
Sure, the staff is a bit haggard on Saturday or Sunday, but YOU try satisfying over 1000 people as you try to keep your cool.
As well, we have had to wait to be seated until our missing person arrives, but think about it if you were a restaurant owner: you're asked to seat a party of six, but only two are present so you put them at a large table. Four of the people don't show up, so the owner loses the review of four diners.
Better yet: you're asked to seat a party of six, but only two are present so you put them at a large table. People in your party dribble in over the next half hour. The server has to come back numerous times to get drink and food orders and also serve your food, not to mention his or her other five tables.
People around you have eaten and left, the table cleared and reseated, but your party is still dribbling in. Two hours go by.
The table beside you has been "turned" twice, but you're still yacking it up. You decide to leave, oh and of course, everybody has separate checks.
The restauranteur has lost tons of money because he couldn't reseat your table.
But hey, you're an important person, aren't you?
