The Scene – The Southern Pit's interior is reminiscent of a country inn, with its sturdy furniture and family photos. Off the bustling front entrance, three adjacent rooms with paneling and hardwood floors keep it simple. The space is minimally decorated in neutral hues; however, an abundance of pig trinkets and souvenirs are bound to catch your eye. – – The Food – Smoky meats are rich in flavor and tender to the bone. The chicken is succulent and the ribs are robust--each seasoned and cooked over hickory wood. An array of sandwiches are offered, but it's the pulled…
If you go someplace else for ribs, you made a mistake.

This is an easy review. Andy serves excellent ribs, chicken, sides, and desserts (when available). I've learned to ask how the ribs are - and if they say they "just came off", order something else. That is when the ribs are a bit.... "al-dente". If you like your meat to be falling off the ribs, you'll want to let them rest a bit longer. As long as they didn't "just come off" they will be the best ribs you ever had. Flavor and seasonings are superb.
The sides range from amazing to outstanding. Seriously, you can't go wrong. I like the greens, you might like the redskin potato salad, someone else might prefer the slaw. They're all good. If you happen to show up when the ribs haven't set-up, order the chicken. Delicious. They also have chipotle wings on occasion, if you happen to be there when they do, be sure to order those too.
It's easy to order more at Andy's than you can eat, so work out a strategy and eat the foods that keep best - last. For me that occasionally means potato salad or slaw for leftovers, and they're still excellent.
- Pros: Food, people, rib-joint feel, Colts memorabilia, selection of hot sauces. Buffet days!
- Cons: Should serve chipotle wings more often
Great Baltimore BBQ

It gets no better than Andy Nelson's BBQ in this area. The ribs should be ordered dry and dipped in sauce. The dry rub is very tasty. The pulled pork and the brisket are very good. I like fries with my bbq but Nelson's does not serve them. That is a miss but they do serve potato wedges. Not really the same to me. They would not be as efficent if fries were offered so the trade off is fine. One thing that gets overlooked is the great service. The people at Nelson's make the place a great/must stop. It seems like one big family working behind the counter.
Great place to stop for luch or dinner. If you pass it will be your loss.

Displaced Texan's review

Best BBQ in these parts. The pulled pork is the best I've ever eaten and buy a bottle of Bama BBQ Sauce to take home. Great sides and classic apple cake. Decor is very entertaining. CATERING: food can be picked up or delivered and will be perfection. They bring the smoker to the party for large groups.
- Pros: Private rooms, Great catering, Easy take out
