Tips for Steeplechase Apartment Homes

Maintenance Repairs Not Being Made. I have lived at Steeplechase for many years in a basement apartment. For the last 3 years the rainspouts were in need of repair. Water overflows over the rainspouts and runs down the side of the building like a water falls causing water to leak into my apartment. For.3 years I requested the rainspouts to be repaired and nothing has been done. The exterior foundation has been damaged from the water over flowing from the rainspout and leaks water into my apartment. After 3 years of no repairs the windows are full of mold and mildew. The flooring is covered with black mold and the carpet by the front windows is rotted from dampness. I had no idea how dangerous mold is until I started getting eye and skin irritation. I felt tired all the time. I went to the doctor and he told me this was symptoms of Black Mold sickness. I sent the Steeplechase Property Manager a letter that I was breaking the lease because the apartment is unhealty to live in. I also contacted the Baltimore County Health Department and sent them photos of the black mold growing in my Steeplechase Apartment. From my experience don't move here, management does little for tenants and raises the rent every year. 2 years ago this apartment complex was on the WJZ news becuase of a bed bug problem with some of the rental units. The units were infected with bed bugs.

Avoid at all costs. Due to extreme noise above me from a new neighbor I asked them if I could transfer apts. They said it would be a $300 transfer fee, a new $250 security deposit, a $75/month increase in rent and the lease would have to run another full year. This seemed unfair to a good resident like me who always paid rent on time and never caused disturbances, so I broke my lease and moved out. I thought I was done with them until a week later, I received charges of $350 from them-$200 for the bathtub which was very old and needed to be replaced and was like that when I moved in (being dumb, I never documented it) also they charged me $25 for cleaning in the bathroom and kithchen. I was up half the night cleaning before I moved out, so I found this odd. $50 to remove two small plastic tables I forgot in a closet. When I went by to ask them about this and spoke to the manager Charlotte, she was very rude and unwilling to listen to me. She brought out pictures that were taken of the apartment (for all I know, they could have been pictures of someone else's apartment) and her attitude was very rude.

If you move into this place (and I strongly recommend that you DON'T), don't be fooled by the warm and friendly manner they have to try to get you in. Don't be fooled by the flowers and bushes around the property. Once you sign that lease, they don't give a damn about you. All they want is to get as much money out of you as possible. They will jack the rent way up after the first year ($75 a month for me). Also don't live anywhere here except the very top floor. If you have someone above you and they are noisy, you will be MISERABLE. Make sure you don't make the same mistake as me- take pictures of EVERYTHING when you move in and when you move out. Document and report any issues immediately so they don't try to screw you later (because they will) and demand they do a walkthrough of the apartment with you before you leave. Best advice however: AVOID STEEPLECHASE.
