Overrated. The only thing authentic is the MSG level. – Ever since I got to Columbia, everyone says this is the best chinese food in town. Until Jesse Wong's opened, I would have had to agree, which is SAD. This is inauthentic Americanized chinese food. For people who think this is how Chinese food should be, it probably is the best around. If you know better, it's a huge disappointment-- go to wheaton or rockville for better food.
I have MSG sensitivity and this place sets me off like no other. When you ask for no MSG, this is when you find out that they can't change the egg rolls because they get them frozen and all the sauces are pre-made and no MSG-free substitutions are available. My last workplace got their catering a lot and I turn down free food because it makes me so ill.
One of the best! – After many years in business, Hunan Manor still one of my favorites Asian Restaurants in Columbia. The food and service are very good. Good portions and good value.
Great Local Food – This place is one of my faves. The food is always wonderful, the prices are right, and the atmosphere is welcoming.
Chinese cuisine served in family-friendly restaurant offers lunch and dinner daily. – In Short
Inside the classy and elegant Chinese restaurant, an indoor fountain, wooden booths and a 2,000 gallon fish tank welcome college students and middle-aged guests. The eatery i known to be filled to capacity and on some nights, the take-out counter is busy. Menu items include seafood, beef, chicken and pork and more than 10 different kinds of soup and appetizers to choose from. Locals flock for the steamed rockfish with ginger black bean sauce.
Pick Another place for carry out. – Whoever wrote the other reviews must be friends of the owner because the food as this place was greasy, lacking in flavor and generally not very good. Avoid the eggrolls they are thick, greasy and devoid of any meat whatsoever. The Kung Poa Chicken has no green onion a little spice and less flavor. The orange chicken has some orange rind, but again curiously lacked any flavor. The pork fried rice was again bland and flavor-less. I don't really know how they got all the good flavors out of the food, but it was the blandess Chinese food I'd ever eaten. The General Tsao's Chicken was the best of the bunch and I'd give it only a B-. Again, avoid this restaraunt or you will overpay for bad Chinese food.
Beautiful and Tasty – This restaurant is very pretty, with walls made of fishtanks and rich oriental colors covering everything. GREAT EGGROLLS, very authentic and classy...would be a good place for a date. Main-courses are very large, so consider sharing; even for big eaters, two for three people is a good ratio. If you are concerned about MSG, make sure to ask that your food be made without it.
Excellent! – This is by far the best Chinese Restaurant I've been to. Have been there many times, and never had bad service. I've tried many of the dishes on the menu and everything is excellent. Prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get.
Best Chinese Food in Area – I have eaten at Hunan manor consistently over the past several years, and I will say it is the best Chinese food in the area. Its dishes are as Chinese as a Chinese restaurant can get in the United States (don't expect exotic or hyper-spicy like Sichuan, but judging from the large 1st generation Chinese customer base, its close enough). Prices are reasonable, and portion sizes are good. The food is consistently good, and I've never ordered anything that we've regretted afterward. Go with as many people as possible so that you can order from the wide selection of dishes.
This is REAL Chinese food! – Hunan Manor has some of the best Chinese food we have ever eaten! It is a great place for couples, friends and groups to go. Dishes are presented very elegantly and they certainly give you a decent portion of food. When our family of 5 adults dines there, we usually order a soup or 2 appetizers and 3 entrees just to give you an idea of how ample the portions are. We always have leftovers as well, so it's a good deal! There are just so many things I could say about this restaurant, but I think the thing that impresses me most about the authenticity of the food is that many Chinese families and groups dine here on a regular basis...something I have never seen in any of the other Chinese restaurants we have frequented! It is a good value, great service and certainly worth a ride to Columbia!:)
Great food - But EVERYONE knows it... – Most people from this area judge the quality of chinese takeout based on this restaurant. While they do deliver locally, you'll get your food twice as fast if you pick up. And even with their recent expansion, if you want to dine in expect to wait. I don't think they take reservations - but if you have a large group be sure to call ahead as they will try to accommodate you.
