The Scene
The Helmand's colorful main dining room is adorned with festive Afghani clothing and tapestries. The outer room has a burnished wooden bar and several intimate tables. Both dining rooms feature pristine white tablecloths and dapper staff.
The Food
Every dish is a careful composition of cumin, coriander, mint and other spices. The sweet-tart banjan borwani appetizer, for example, combines tender eggplant and tomatoes in a yogurt-garlic sauce. Slightly spicy chunks of buttery sea bass in the korma mahi dissolve on the tongue. The spicy-sweet kabuli is unforgettable, with chunks of lamb (tender enough to cut with a spoon), brown rice, raisins and glazed carrots. The Helmand's reputation as a great vegetarian restaurant is well-deserved: The hot, tangy vegetarian korma stew is stunning.

The Helmand restaurant is one of my favorite places in Baltimore. The decor, service, food, and atmosphere is exceptional. The prices are also reasonable.

The bread is a must-get here. My bf and I always bring it home and make sandwiches from it the next morning. Vegetarian versions of their appetizer are fabulous....and if you're looking for a place to take a first date...this is a warm, inviting, sweet spot. Very relaxing, very fulfilling. It does get busy though so reservations are a must unless you don't mind waiting by the bar. the funniest thing about the menu though is the understated name for thier best desert. They call it special ice-cream but truly this is one the most delicately flavored, fresh date, fig and mango combination that money can buy. Two thumbs up to my favorite neighborhood kitchen! btw, cazbar is also great at least for pides (and cheap too).

We were ignored for the first five minutes upon entering the restaurant. After speaking with someone, twice, we were unceremoniously shown a table at which time we decided to leave. Will never find out if the food is better than the reception.

Plan Ahead:
If there's an open table on a weekend evening, it must be a slow night at The Helmand. Reservations are strongly recommended.
Save Room for Dessert:
In addition to sweet Middle Eastern pastries, The Helmand also serves the creamiest vanilla ice cream around, studded with figs, dates and fresh mango.
