Insulting and rude on the phone.. I have been a loyal customer of Helmands for ten years in three cities. I called for a Saturday reservation and got a 5:30 reservation. I was told that we would need to be done by 7pm. Never has a restaurant openly told me that I had a specified period of time to eat and be gone. I told him that we would be 6 adults and one baby. He says to me: "If your baby is crying, will you please take your baby to the side or outside?" Never has a restaurant told me how I need to treat my child for their sake. Restaurants find all kinds of ways of turning away customers with babies. But explicitly on the phone?I am completely appalled and insulted by this experience and will never go to any Helmands, in any city, ever again. Its too bad. The food is good.
Wonderful!!!. This is one of the best resurants in Baltimore! A must to anyone living in or visiting Baltimore.
Exotic spices, fine food and superb service have made this local institution Baltimore's premier Afghani restaurant..
The Scene
The Helmand's colorful main dining room is adorned with festive Afghani clothing and tapestries. The outer room has a burnished wooden bar and several intimate tables. Both dining rooms feature pristine white tablecloths and dapper staff.
The Food
Every dish is a careful composition of cumin, coriander, mint and other spices. The sweet-tart banjan borwani appetizer, for example, combines tender eggplant and tomatoes in a yogurt-garlic sauce. Slightly spicy chunks of buttery sea bass in the korma mahi dissolve on the tongue. The spicy-sweet kabuli is unforgettable, with chunks of lamb (tender enough to cut with a spoon), brown rice, raisins and glazed carrots. The Helmand's reputation as a great vegetarian restaurant is well-deserved: The hot, tangy vegetarian korma stew is stunning.
Love their lamb!. I love their lamb, it is so tender and flavorful. In one dish with rice flavored with cumin and raisins with grated carrot. It comes with a delicious sauce as well. Our favorite appetizer is the pumpkin filled dumplings with yogurt sauce, we had to start getting one each, as sharing wasn't an option. The service is friendly and efficient. Decor is pleasantly ethnic with a nice wine list to keep everyone happy.
Afghan Cuisine. The Helmand is a great place to dine. The food is GREAT, the staff is friendly, and there's a great atmoshpere there.
A fantastic meal!. My friend & went there on the spur of the moment, without reservations, in jeans & were able to get a table by promising to leave by a certain time. Excellent marinated meats and amazing creamed spinach! also, good decor and atmosphere.
Great food. I had the best lamb dish here: cubes of marinated, tender lamb, currants, carrots and rice. So good. Service was alway accomodating. And prices are reasonable.
