Editorial Review for Cafe Brighton – by Citysearch Staff

The Scene
Situated in the gracious Harbor Court Hotel, Brighton's is possibly the prettiest dining room in Baltimore with its lemon silk wallpaper, chintz curtains, hand-painted floral ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Inner Harbor.

The Food
The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, dinner and afternoon tea. Breakfast selections are traditional morning foods. At lunch, soups, pastas, salads, and sandwiches beckon, like smoked chicken salad with granny smith apples and raisins on sourdough, flaxseed bread. Dinner choices include a velvety smoked oyster stew appetizer, an arugula salad with shaved fennel, black mission figs and pickled ginger vinaigrette, juicy salmon in parchment paper with aromatic vegetables, veal scaloppini in a savory mushroom and roasted shallot sauce, or Baltimore's Surf and Turf, a tender filet mignon and a sauteed lump crabcake.

We made a reservation for Sunday night and arrived early. Even though the restaurant was empty, we were shuffled to the corner. The waiter, Josh, was pretentious and rude. When we asked for his opinion on a bottle of wine (yes, it was not the most expensive wine on the list), he responded: "I don't know how much wine do you drink, it's impossible for me to give you a sterling answer". He then tried to up-sell another bottle that costs twice as much. Just came back from wine country, we felt that was way over-priced. We went with our choice, a 2000 California cab, and he came back in 2 minutes and told us they were out of that bottle and asked us to pick another one, so we did. The food was nothing to write home about and the service was rushed-- from the bread, the appetizer to the entree was less than 10 minutes. We were still at our first glass and they came to pick up the dishes. Eventually I asked him, "Are you closing early today?" He said, "No. Why?" I told him we never felt so rushed by the service in a decent restaurant. He said they were prepared for the restaurant week and everything was ready to go (pre-cooked, I assume). His attitude was so snobbish that we felt insulted. We went there for its menu and the quality was disappointing. The scallop tasted previously frozen and the fish was smaller than a business card. I had the wild berry with cream for dessert and the blueberry (which should be in season) was dry out and wrinkled. I felt we wasted a perfect evening and over a hundred dollars, which could be spent anywhere else with much enjoyable results. I would not go back and definitely not recommend it.

Pros: Convenient location

Cons: Condescending, pretentious and snobbish service

Given the IC name I thought Brighton's would at least be semi-decent. Was I ever wrong! Its food quality rivals that of Denny's. There are much better choices in the Inner Harbor. The only good thing is the valet parking for free (but you tip them anyhow). Service is okay, but certainly not what one would expect from an IC restaurant. A Day's Inn, maybe.

Pros: parking

Cons: food, price, service
