Editorial Review for Attman's Delicatessen – by Sandra Aring

The Scene
Award-winning corned beef and an amazing array of sandwiches are among the reasons Attman's has been packing 'em in since 1915. Minutes from Baltimore's Inner Harbor (in a once-thriving neighborhood that's seen better days), the deli's main hall is narrow, noisy and unpretentious. An adjoining room allows patrons to sit among photos of sated celebrities who partook of the generous portions back in the day.

The Food
Push your way to the end of the line and call out your order to the friendly workers behind the counter. Don't let sandwich names like Tongue Fu or Gay Liveration distract you. Traditionalists keep coming back for knishes, reubens and matzo ball soup. Just be sure to loosen your belt so you can squeeze in a piece of a homemade ruggelach or a helping of bread pudding afterwards.

Parking

Housed behind blocks of abandoned, neglected buildings, Attman's has plenty of nearby on-street parking.

I have went to this palce for the last 30 years and always have enjoyed every visit until today. I visited today and it was with great anticipation. On the drive to Attmans I was think of an extra lean corned beef sandwich on rye with mustard and literally my month was watering. I had not visited Attmans for a few months. When I visit it reminds me of my father and the days we would get a sandwich and laugh at the "New York" style clerks behind the counter yelling and shouting friendly directions (next, hurry up, we don't have all day, etc.) The place has really ran into a wall. One of the cases that would display all different kind of specialities was spray painted black so you could not see thru the glass, I assume because of a mechinical failure. The place was dirty and the clerks seemed to have their minds on something else. The corned beef I had today was fair, but the guy that waited on me sliced it thick and it really was sort of dry. He had gloves on but touched everything possible (even itching his ear while checking me out) and then continues to make food afterwards, I was very diappointed. I normally do not write reviews. It is with great sadness that I am seeing the start of Attmans becoming a distant memory in Baltimore history. If the guy that manages this historical institution reads this please believe me when I say I am not trying to be mean. Please restore this place to the greatness that has served Baltimore for so many years. You have the product, just need to tweek the environment and service delivery. Do it for Seymour!

After seeing Attman's listed as a candidate for Best Of Baltimore Sandwiches, I had to give them a try. I drove down Lombard Street and easily found the deli. Off street parking for Attman's is directly across the street. I ordered the Hungry Man's Special, grabbed a Root Beer, and drove to Patterson Park to enjoy my lunch in the shade. What a great sandwich! Huge helping of melt in your mouth Corned Beef on some very excellent Jewish Rye. I order Corned Beef Specials at different places and I'm usually disapointed. This is how a Corned Beef Special should taste. I'll be back to try the other sandwiches, but I can't imagine anything being better than the Hungry Man's Special.

Pros: Good Location, Enough Parking, Great Sandwich
