Editorial Review for Gertrude's – by Walaika Haskins
The Scene
Golden oak columns, a red tile floor, brass accents, soft lighting and a large mural of life on the Eastern Shore combine to welcome curious museumgoers and hungry diners with a warm laid-back charm. Especially friendly servers and coaxingly mellow tunes ensure the classy atmosphere always feels relaxed as well as formal.
The Food
Named for the grandmother of cookbook author, PBS host and restaurant founder Chef John Shields, Gertrude's is an homage to the best of Maryland's coastal cooking: The menu features local favorites from land and sea, sometimes enhanced by Shields' own special touches. A standard like the crab cake, for instance, comes in three choices--traditional, Eastern Shore and crab cake du jour. Entrees have flexible sides such as a tangy-sweet apple-fennel coleslaw and the garlic-rich sauteed spinach. Those who order the Chincoteague oysters fried in a light cornmeal batter as an appetizer may end up looking to feast on more of its main course counterpart.

Insider Tips
Save MoneyOn Tuesday, Gertrude's becomes Gertie's cafe. Diners may choose from 10 entrees (that come with two sides) for a much lower price. Even the wine is cheaper.
Where to SitWhen the weather is fine, ladies take a trip out of doors and dine at tables scattered throughout the BMA's sculpture garden. Conversely, if there's a nip in the air, seating adjacent to the patio can get chilly.

Sat outside for my husband's birthday lunch. Great service and the crabcakes were outstanding. I ordered mine broiled and his was fried. You can also pick from 10 different sauces.
Pros: Diverse menu
Cons: Noisy if you sit inside

I went here with some friends for their Tuesday night special were they have $10 and $12 entrées from the regular dinner menu. The place was very nice and the decor was perfect. I started with the Cream of Crab Soup with lump crab and scented with sherry (normally $6 for a cup but Tuesdays it $4). I had the Portobella Crab Imperial-grilled marinated portobella mushroom piled high with crab imperial and served with savory rice (the rice needed more flavor) and vegetables (normally $24 but Tuesday it $12. For dessert we split the Bread Pudding which was the BEST I have ever had! The other people tried: The crabcake platter for $18 (they have a special platter for $12 on Tuesdays) A Berry Good Salad $10- field greens, fresh berries, goat cheese, toasted pistachios & a berry vinaigrette Turkey Meatloaf Platter (normally 16 but it was 10)-fresh ground turkey with red peppers, garlic & parmesan cheese, served with a roasted tomato sauce, mashed potatoes and sauteed veggies
