Great anniversary dinner.
The Black Olive was a great choice because it was the best meal we ever had!
The night began with us arriving 15 minutes late for our reservation, but they immediately seated us with no complaints. We liked that the restaurant had a sophisticated feel without being stuffy.
The person that seated us brought us 2 glasses of complimentary champagne and congratulated us on our anniversary. A few minutes later, he escorted us to the fish display and explained, with great detail, what they had to offer that night. Very educational.
The meal itself was awesome! For appetizers, we shared a bowl of fish soup and a crab cake. Both were a pleasure to eat. The crab cake had no fillers and it was the best crab cake I ever had (and I'm extremely picky about crab cakes)! With the main courses, I decided to be a little adventurous and go with the highly recommended Dorade Royale and my husband got the Lamb/Shrimp combination. The server presented and filleted (my choice) the fish before us. The fish was just as it was described and it was terrific (got the lemon and olive oil sauce with it). I'm not an experienced wine drinker, so I asked the waiter to recommend something that would go well with the fish. He served me a Pinot Grigio (Bottega Vinaia) that was wonderful and went very well with the seafood. My husband was very happy with his dish. The lamb was seasoned well and shrimp was divine. The best shrimp we ever had! For dessert, we ordered the Baklava ice cream and Loukomades (donuts from the previous review). Again, the best ice cream I ever had and the "donuts" reminded me of ice cream cones. Great combination!
Do Not Eat Here!. My wife and I went with another couple. Our table was large enough to fit 2, but we were forced to try to fit 4 to eat. Many of the same problems listed in other reviews. Martini's were weak as were the other mixed drinks. Took 15-20 minutes to find the wine (1/2 bottle - $35.00; sheesh!). Quality of food was good, but we could have found the same/better with a much better atmosphere for less cost at several other restaurants. This place has an overinflated view of itself.
Good organic food. The reason this place is so expensive is because everything is organic and unrefined. Including desserts. Organic food is always more because it is harder to grow. And organic sugars and flour are much more expensive. That being said......the food here is solidly good. Portions are reasonable, but not large. You will walk out of here feeling like you've eaten, but you will not be stuffed. Granted, for the prices, most people would expect huge portions. But again, you are paying for organic. To most people, this will not be worth it. However, my husband and I eat mostly organic. And if not organic, we eat unrefined (as far as sugar and flour is concerned). So for people who try to eat organic and unrefined flour and sugar, this restaurant will be a treat. The desserts here were good, albeit limited in selection. For seafood lovers, there is a large, exotic menu of fish. Many of which we had never heard of before. And there are a few vegetarian selections on the menu as well. I would highly recommend this establishment for special occasions if you are into organic and/or unrefined foods. However, if you are used to heaping portions, you might want to try your luck elsewhere.
I can only assume that this place received the glowing reviews posted on the wall under very different ownership and management. It struck me as a third rate restaurant whose self-image is that of a wrinkled Hollywood has-been who still considers herself a star.
Sixty dollars bought us two marginal appetizers and two glasses of wine while seated on chairs so uncomfortable that the CIA could use them while interviewing prisoners. The shtick of touring the fish case was more befitting a TGI Fridays.
The only way I would use the phrase world-class to describe this place is that it is quite similar to the tourist-trap restaurants that line the main streets of many European cities and sucker in passers-by for an overpriced meal and cavalier service.
One of the best dining experiences ever. This has to be the best restaurant in Baltimore. Organic foods, prepared fresh with no fancy sauces to cover the taste. The staff knows their business. Definitely not for the fast food crowd. This is where you go to spend an evening of fine dining, European style. Probably not what most Baltimoreans are used to. This is what the world traveler expects. EXCELLENT. I'm going back soon.
What a Disappointment!!. Reading the last review, I can see some things never change. Poor Service, Attitude from Unskilled Servers, not too mention the fact that after dropping $60+ per person, we were still hungry when we left. Out of every "beer and wine" we selected, we wondered WHY it was that in a Fells Point Rowhome with limited menu selection and No Air Conditioning, we couldn't find a bottle of wine less that $40.00. Please! This isn't Morton's, Fleming's, Prime Rib, etc. Give me a break. This place needs to seriously re-evaluate their priorities.
This Fells Point gem serves fresh Greek food with Mediterranean charm..
Housed in a small building on a quiet historic street in Fells Point, the Black Olive is almost obscured. Once inside, however, you'll experience authentic Mediterranean atmosphere and cuisine.
The menu is simple, with a variety of well-prepared entrees to make your mouth water. It'll be hard to save room after you've sampled the hot, fresh-baked bread brought to your table, but it's worth the effort. Whole fish are perfectly done, veal chops are large and juicy, and the octopus salad appetizer is absolutely superb. If you're looking for a light lunch, try the brochettes; perfect, tender cubes of meat skewered with sweet and tangy peppers. For dessert, Black Olive's carrot cake is delicious. Seasoned with Greek spices and topped with yogurt-coconut icing, it's a delightful revision of a longtime favorite.

Appetizers were great, but rather skimpy for the prices ($7 for 2 grilled sardines in grape leaves, $10 for octopus salad). Main course whole grilled fish was very fresh, but server was inexperienced, taking too long to bone it at table, allowing food to cool. Some shellfish was undercooked. Wine list is twice as long as it needs to be and, though not exactly overpriced, it also includes nothing for less than $40. Considering entrees are about $25, you'll drop about $75 a person -- too much to excuse the flaws.
Lackluster meal. Our party was looking forward to a fine meal, good wine, and a great evening...boy were we disappointed. The waiter was not well trained; the wine was overpriced; the food was marginal at best. Our bill came to approximately $75.00 per person; much too much to spend on a meal that was only marginal. I don't recommend this restaurant to anyone who has a clue about food. I was very disappointed and will not go back.
Maybe the worst ever.... Maybe the worst dining experience ever... poorly trained staff, ripped dinning room chair covers in a venue with $25-$35 entrees was not expected... it took nearly 60 minutes for our food to arrive and 5 of the 6 entrees we ordered were served cold... to top things off the valet locked the keys in the car. The owners observed the poor service, serving of the cold food and the valet fiasco and then offered us her "attitude" as compensation. When you drop $600 clams you expect at least common courtesy.
