Wouldn't go anywhere else in town!

by photochica

I created an account just to write a review about how phenomenal I think this place is. The atmosphere of the old location left something to be desired, and when they moved to a much more aesthetically pleasing location up the street, I was shocked when the prices didn't rise. The fish is always fresh and well prepared, and I love their specialty rolls (which are all priced below $10, with the exception of a few 10-piece rolls). The menu is extensive, and you can experiment without breaking the bank. I've emptied my wallet far too many times at much more expensive places in town, and I won't be going anywhere else in the future.

  • Pros: freshness, ambience, attentive service, BYOB
  • Cons: none

Amazing Sushi Best I've Ever Had

by prettyinpink18

I was looking down the reviews for Asahi Sushi today and I couldn't help but notice one or two reviews that stood out and were extremely bad among the very good ratings that were there. I for one find Asahi Sushi's sushi to be the best out there. I'm from the Philly area and I can't even find good sushi at Pod which is part of the one star restaurant group. Also for the one review YOU CAN'T MAKE SUSHI WITH LONG GRAIN RICE so before you go and make a comment make sure you know what your talking about.

Best Sushi in Baltimore / some of the best sushi I've had anywhere, talk to the chef

by redelephantlabel

Asahi Sushi, for everything that it is, is quite possibly one of the best sushi places I've ever had the pleasure to eat at. From the moment you enter you feel at ease. Greeted by a maneki-neko (those welcoming cat statues typical of Japanese establishments) the place is cozy, warm, and unassuming. This isn't the sort of place that makes you feel like you need to know the sound of one hand clapping to enjoy the food. The effort they save on gussying up the place most definitely goes into the food though. The rolls are some of the best I've ever had, always fresh, good texture, great flavor, perfect size, well made. I've been to so many sushi restaurants that served mushy fish, or rolls that fell apart, or fish that tasted like almost nothing, to rice that wasn't fully cooked. Asahi makes sushi very well, and it has just the right flavor, i.e. if you order a spicy roll, it's not going to be drowning in hot sauce (like some other places I've been). The staff is very friendly too. It is customary to talk to a sushi chef about the quality of his food, and to make good relations with him, but a compliment here is just a good way to start a conversation, as the chefs are almost always willing to chat it up. All this, plus the hours of operation, plus B.Y.O.B if you're into that, plus the sticks of Juicy Fruit that come with every check, plus their green tea ice cream (highly recommended) make me wish I lived in Fells Point. Hey, the price isn't bad either. My last meal (with a friend) consisted of a spicy tuna roll, yellowtail and scallion roll, rainbow roll, tamago roll, two cokes, and a pint of green tea ice cream to go, all for 20 bucks. It doesn't get much better than that.

  • Pros: Great atmosphere, great food, great service, friendly staff, great price, awesome hours
  • Cons: none

ok food

by yrusolong

I went to this place last night. this place is tiny and very cramped. The waiters weren't attentive. I had to wait wait 45 minutes just to get food and refill on my drinks. The food was just ok, they used regular long grain rice instead of the sticky rice which made the food less authentic.

  • Pros: the food was average
  • Cons: the service was terrible and the place was very small

good sushi, easy on the wallet

by karakiz

i checked out Asahi sushi after reading the reviews on here. i thought the sushi was pretty good (not the best i've ever had) but it was tasty. a soda was $1.00 extra and i got a special for 13.95 - miso soup, 6 pieces of spicy tuna roll, 6 pieces of their "broadway" roll, and 6 pieces of a California roll (i think). Total - 15.70 including tax. Not bad for soup, 18 pcs of sushi and a drink. the rolls do tend to fall apart and are on the large side (i could barely fit a whole piece in my mouth). i was the only person there when i walked in, and the service was quick and friendly. anyway, not the greatest sushi i have ever had, but its good if you are on a budget.

there is pretty limited seated and it is BYOB. Also, their daily specials are HUGE. Mine came with 18 pieces of sushi and a bowl of soup. I ended up taking half of it home. Might be cheaper to just order individual rolls instead of the special if you are dining alone.

**Edit: I went back for a second time and the sushi was wonderful! Good size and everything - not gigantic like before. I think I must have gone on a bad day. Cheap and delicious. Def recommend it.

  • Pros: cheap, decent sushi, good specials
  • Cons: rolls fell apart

Most amazing sushi

by acunning

Asahi is a wonderful neighborhood restaurant! As soon as you walk in the front door, the ownwer-JC, is quick to make friends. The food is wonderful and very reasonably priced. My husband and I go at least twice a week. The fells point roll, which is an eel roll with fresh tuna on top, is AMAZING. The rainbow roll is second to none.

This place is becoming busier and busier as the word spreads...They are worth any wait you might have to endure.

  • Pros: Fabulous sushi, cheap prices, friendly chef/owner, intimate atmosphere
  • Cons: sometimes can get busy...wait for food.

If you've ever had half decent sushi you'll be very disappointed!

by kingmissle

Just a moment ago I wrote a long and detailed review of why this restaurant was not worth the time, money, or travel. However, this site decided to refresh the page and wipe out my review. So I'll leave you with this:

The service was unbelievably slow. It took 20 minutes for some salads (Apps.) and then after eating those slowly we still waited over 30 more minutes before the sushi arrived. It turned out to be roughly 90% rice and 10% semi-warm, less than fresh fish. The sushi chef also seemed to have forgotten how to make a roll because they all fell apart when you tried to pick them up. It was not tasty in the least bit, and all 5 of us felt a bit sick after we left. Factor in the relatively high prices for rolls, this place doesn't even deserve 1 star.

Overall: SKIP it!

  • Cons: lack of space, price, taste, poorly made rolls, etc

Amazing Sushi with a Great Atmosphere

by kae916

My first experience at Asahi was a little less than a year ago on a first date (great first date idea by the way). Since then, I have eaten there at least once a week. It is a cute, inexpensive, homey feeling place right on the main street of Fells Point. It is a B.Y.O.B. restaurant which helps keep the bill cheap without cutting out the sake and beer. I always sit at the bar where you can really get to know the sushi chef. The variety of rolls are packed with the perfect amount of ingredients. Other sushi restaurants don't even compare for me. When I have eaten at other sushi restaurants (only when I am out of town JC!), I am never fully satisfied because it was not from Asahi. The fun and friendly staff add to the high quality food and low prices. I highly recommend dining at Asahi and I guarantee you will leave full and happy!

  • Pros: Atmosphere, prices, taste and variety of rolls
