Kawasaki's

I am from Seattle where good sushi and Japanese food can be easily found. I have struggled to find good Japanese restaurants in Seattle. Most places used tea bag for green tea (disgusting), their fish wasn't as fresh as I wanted it to be, and maki didn't have much flavor.

Enter Kawasaki's. Staff is very friendly and helpful, and atmosphere is nice. Everything from sashimi and sushi to zaru soba and mochi were fresh and flavorful. Easily the best Japanese food I ever had in Baltimore. My friends and I really enjoyed the food. You can tell from the color and smell of the tea that the owner took his time to buy high end flavorful green tea to compliment his food.

The only thing is you have to find street parking, but on weekends street parking resctrictions don't apply. Other than parking situation I loved everything about this place.

Great Sushi

The quality of the sushi here is the best in Maryland, and rivals the best restaurants in New York, L.A. and Los Vegas. I have been eating at Kawasaki for more than ten years, and never had a bad meal. When you go be sure to look at the specials of the night (for both Sushi and Sake). The specials are usually the highest quality, freshest fish that the owners have managed to find for a limited time. Last fall they had Perfect otoro and a giant clam that just blew me away. Prices are high, but you definitely get your moneys worth.

The Scene
Named for Baltimore's sister city in Japan, Kawasaki carries an air of authenticity. Patrons pull up to the long sushi bar, settle into traditional Japanese seating, or sit at comfortable tables and chairs. Signed photos of celebrities who have dined here attest to the restaurant's popularity--and longevity. (This establishment has been in business since 1984.)

The Food
Kawasaki offers the obligatory tempura and teriyaki, but the focus is on sushi. Rolls are a specialty of the house. The crunchy roll combines eel, smoked salmon and avocado, wrapped up and rolled in tempura chips; the combination of soft rice and crispy tempura makes it a treat. Try the Alaska roll--stuffed with roe, salmon, shrimp and scallops so fresh they haven't had time to acquire that fishy taste. For crab-lovers, the colorful Baltimore roll features sweet blue crab topped with red, green and orange roe.

This restaurant has a fun atmosphere and the food is very good. If you are not good with chopsticks, the staff is happy to help by making you a "cheater" set using rubberbands!

A Great Place, Again and Again

Kawasaki has proven time and time again to be a great place to eat, whether for an office lunch, a special occasion, or just a meal out with your family.

The staff always seem to do their best to make everyone feel welcome, and enjoy their visit to the restaurant. I always get seated immediately, and there is usually space in the window for us. The food is always fresh and delicious, and their menu is varied. I've taken several coworkers, friends and family to Kawasaki and every one of them has been pleased.

• Pros: great service, varied menu, wonderful food
• Cons: very little parking

I agree, good not great

First, there's also a location in Fells. I like that location better than the Charles St. one in terms of atmosphere; I haven't had their sushi yet. The sushi at this location is alright, but it just doesn't compare to other restaurants (not in the area) that I've been to. -Never- order the eel here, by the way, unless you like eating bones. The crunchy sushi roll is worth trying, the selection of sushi is decent, the price is decent, and the restarant has pretty good service. If you're new to sushi, try this one out. If you're a die-hard sushi lover and want to find something new though, keep looking. Quality of sushi? I prefer Cafe Asia's sushi though (but it's more expensive and service is worse than Kawasaki).

Unbelievable!

As a New Englander, I am used to the best quality seafood available, be it in cooked or raw forms. I was surprised to find such high-quality fish down here in Baltimore! This is easily the best sushi I have ever had, and I've been to sushi bars from California to New Hampshire! The small size lends a cozy and comfortable feeling to the wonderful atmosphere, and the close proximity to the Inner Harbor makes it ideal for the tourist and business person alike.
